Trafficking in human beings:

from diversity of practices to legal qualification (s)

Bordeaux, June 6-7, 2019

The legal qualification of trafficking in human beings covers a wide range of realities depending on the geographical origin of the criminal groups, the socio-demographic profile of their members (gender, age, socio-economic categories, etc.), forms of exploitation (forced labour, sexual exploitation, forced delinquency, etc.), the types of constraints imposed, the methods of recruitment of victims, etc. All these parameters are difficult to identify and yet essential to understand this criminal phenomenon in its complexity. Understanding the phenomenon leads to appropriate criminal qualification, better policies and the implementation of actions to punish perpetrators or protect victims.
The diversity of realities within human trafficking justifies the use of many disciplines (law, anthropology, sociology, criminology, computer science, etc.). The first day, the symposium "Trafficking in human beings, from diversity of practices to legal qualification " will question the relevance of existing concepts to capture these realities in their complexity. We will focus on the concepts of mafias, organised crime and trafficking in human beings, etc. At the same time, we will be interested in the description of criminal acts: the study of the role of the actors, their individual trajectories, their motivations, their relational neighbourhood... These two approaches will be put in relation to each other. The main goal is to work simultaneously on different dimensions and on several types of exploitation.
The second day will focus specifically on Nigerian groups involved in trafficking for sexual exploitation. The number of actors involved and the complexity of the means used to coerce victims make these groups a particularly relevant subject to study.

The symposium was organized with the support of GIP Mission de recherche Droit et Justice, Conseil Régional  Nouvelle Aquitaine and University of Bordeaux.

 Registration is free but mandatory.
